Products We Use

We exclusively use the Nikwax line of equine-safe laundry products, selected for performance, fabric care, and environmental responsibility.

Nikwax Rug Wash

A specialized cleaner formulated specifically for horse blankets.

Why we use it:

  • Prolongs the life of canvas rugs and synthetic blankets

  • Suitable for all blanket types, including those with breathable liners

  • Cleans effectively without leaving water-attracting residues

  • Removes detergent residue left behind by previous washes

  • Water-based, biodegradable, non-flammable, and non-hazardous

  • Free of fluorocarbons

Nikwax Rug Proof (Water Repellent Treatment)

Available as an optional service.

Benefits include:

  • Adds and renews water repellency

  • Revives breathability in canvas and synthetic blankets

  • Resists water absorption caused by flexing and abrasion

  • Helps extend blanket life and improve performance in wet weather

Waterproofing is recommended every other year at minimum, depending on use and exposure.

Why Routine Cleaning Matters

Manure and urine contain ammonia, which acts like an acid on fabric fibers. When left unwashed, this residue gradually breaks down the strength of the material, leaving blankets more vulnerable to tearing, seam failure, and premature wear.

Environmental exposure also plays a role. Blankets left hanging on fences or stored improperly through warmer months are subject to:

  • UV fading

  • Fabric weakening

  • Breakdown of waterproof coatings

  • Loss of water repellency

Over time, these factors significantly shorten the lifespan of a blanket.

Our process is intentionally simple and careful: cold-water washing, multiple rinse cycles, line-drying without heat, and orderly return. These methods protect fabric strength, waterproofing, and longevity.
